    Winnebago arrived exactly as the century turned, but from the begining, it has seemed as if she had always already been alive. Made of glass and plastic -- the products of her age -- she is perfectly smooth all over. So smooth, in fact, that she slips through spaces (cultural, geographic, and temporal). On first hearing or reading, her words sound garbled and incoherent, and they slide by your facilities of comprehension. But once some sort of context is established, she is perfectly clear (or rather, imperfectly reflective). Her meanings take off from yours, distort them, color them, and slip them into place. Toothless, she is all lips, all slips, and gathers nutrients and pleasure by sliding past the object/subject of her desires. Always moving across a rugged terrain (like the vehicle in whose honor she is named), she cannot be pinned down. She slides through relationships and sentences without friction, and thus without heat. She is always cool to the touch, but because she is always slipping away, touches always become strokes, always attempt and just fail to generate heat. She kisses, rolls, slides. She's even been known to levitate for a few moments, eluding even the grasp of gravity every now and then. She is the one who got away. She swallows without biting. She is slippery when dry. She has given me the slip. Given me lip. She is a transvestite, but this means nothing. It is key to nothing. There are no keys to her, because she is not locked, because there is no inside. She is surface though and through, surface folded over itself again and again so as to give the appearance of depth. I love her deeply.

    I wonder how the body parts were chosen, because

    important things are left out. For example, I would

    have liked to have made my body toeless and given it

    four or five leg joints, but these were not options.
